What is a balayage?

A balayage is a colour technique, and this is highly important to understand. It can be created in many ways but is typically a hand painted technique which creates a soft, subtle and blended sun-kissed, lived in colour look. This technique can also combine the use of foil – this is then known as the foilyage technique and enables a stylist to achieve brighter results.

How different is a balayage to an ombre?

A balayage is a soft, yet subtle technique which is created to blend and give a low contrasted look, oppose to an ombre which is a dramatic yet gradient colour technique which creates a horizontal colour – often dark to light or bright.

How is balayage different to highlights?

Highlights are a traditional technique used to separate hair within sections using methods such as weaving, baby-lighting or slicing hair from a specific section taken. Hair is then painted, usually root to tip within a foil, which creates a uniform colour generally with more contrast than the hair left out of the foil – when hair grows, a distinct line can potentially appear.

Can I have a balayage on short hair?
Short answer, yes! A balayage is a technique that can be applied to all hair lengths, textures and densities. The right method can help accentuate natural textures such as curl patterns, give the illusions of fuller or less dense hair through dimension and most of all give you style. So, is a hair colour, really just a colour?

How often should I maintain a balayage and how do I care for it at home?

A balayage technique would be maintained depending on your stylists’ specifications, however; it is typical to rebook a naturally blended balayage between 8-12 weeks often with a cut, treatment and tonal glaze in-between which keeps your colour looking fresh and revived. Be aware, that when pushing the boundaries of maintenance, many salons charge an additional fee due to extra time and product required.
